A New York jazz musician discovers he has a half-brother—a king in Kenya—and embarks on a journey to Africa that turns into a spiritual odyssey.

When a copper deposit is discovered on the land of the Makenda tribe in eastern Kenya, a young king, Ule Samanga, is told to relocate his people to a refugee camp in Nairobi or risk imprisonment. When all appears lost, the young king discovers the existence of Curtis Jackson, a mysterious half brother presently living in New York. Believing this unexpected news to be an omen from the spirit of his ancestors, he eagerly seeks Curtis’s help to save their sacred tribal homeland.

A struggling mortgage broker and former jazz prodigy, Curtis initially has no interest in developing a relationship with his newly found African family. But when he’s presented with an intriguing business offer, he embarks on a journey to Africa that becomes a spiritual odyssey, changing him in ways he never imagined.

In this assured debut, Richard Crystal weaves a complex story of contemporary moral imperatives conceived during Obama’s victorious election as America’s first black president. Themes of corporate malfeasance and exploitation will resonate with readers of The Constant Gardener and Blood Diamond. But beyond the various political machinations, readers will find a heartwarming story infused with the strains of Coltrane, the history of jazz, and the enduring power of family.

A Reign Supreme A Novel edition by Richard Crystal Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I don't usually read new authors but this one came highly recommended from a friend. I was hooked by page 5 and didn't put it down until it was finished. Entwining 2 subcultures mired in the realities of their own cultures the author keeps you interested in the outcome. Mixing facts and fiction to paint a vivid, believable picture I found myself involved and rooting for a positive outcome which you will have to discover for yourself.
What an enjoyable book! The imagery makes it a stand out. It's a moving tale bringing together a small African kingdom and American values (but not morality) in a way that the reader cannot anticipate. And in the end, a native New Yorker can find common ground among native Africans--and we see how they can embrace morality and respect on the same footing. I admire the author's talent!
"A Reign Supreme" offers an engaging story that is both well-told and entertaining. Descriptions capture the flavors, sights and smells of the New York street scene along with African village life. I have lived the former and visited the latter and would say that both settings seem authentic. The story moves forward at a timely pace with characters who ring true--all leading to a satisfying conclusion. Kudos to Richard Crystal on his debut novel!
The subject was very interesting to me and the story line was interesting as well but somehow the writing seemed somewhat amateurish. It just didn't flow for me.
I'm very selfish with my reading time at the end of the each day. This wonderful book became my main focus and I couldn't wait to experience the story as it unfolded with each nightly read. I'm a huge jazz fan and found the character relationships, story arc and dialog as elegant as a great piece of music intertwined with a superb improvised performance. We are lucky to have a new & greatly talented author!
A Reign Supreme is an excellent story that includes the human condition, family interaction, corporate greed, politics, societal expectations, and individual growth in the modern world. The descriptions of the places both in NYC and in Kenya are wonderful--you can feel and see the buildings, the land, and the animals. I was particularly taken back to areas of Kenya that I visited in 2012, and they once again became alive, and I could taste the cold Tuskers with them. The story is further enhanced by the jazz sounds that permeate throughout. This is a wonderful story.
A Reign Supreme by Richard Crystal skillfully paints awesome pictures of Africa while telling a story that has twists and turns that keep you interested and reading from start to finish. Like every great novel it has excellent character development, a well developed story line and best of all the descriptions paint magnificent pictures, (without being overly wordy). The characters had dimension and were believable. I worried about the Makenda Tribe, Ule and his family. I believed in Curtis, his many faces and struggles. The research and facts that surrounded the story made it all seem real. The jazz references were awesome and informative, (I like to learn from the books I read)but the pictures painted of Africa were breath taking. I could not put the book down. I was totally vested. It was so interesting to think and totally accept that the people of the Makenda Tribe not only loved their way of life but still believed in the mojo. The references, which were odiously extensively researched, gave this novel the feeling of truth. I love when a book takes my mind on to it's own side trips because I am relating to the characters and story. The story keeps throwing curve balls that keep you scared and worried & needing to read on! The Baseball and Jazz references were real. The new stadium, 911, Obama, mind scams, Madoff, summer at the shore , this is a 21st century commentary. The story is an emotional roller-coaster grounded in real time. All I can say is... 'I DIG IT' and "shit, son what took you so long?"
I am looking forward to Richard Crystal's next book.
